If you’re in any of my online groups you’ve no doubt noticed by now that it’s been awhile since I shared anything or sent an email about anything. I have been taking a long break from groups and have been focusing mainly on my junk journals and being creative. It’s amazing what you can do when you have a creative idea about something. For years since I started making journals or doing any kind of mixed media or art in general, I never had my own type of style that I could express to others. When I started making junk journals I saw a video on YouTube and started making junk journals like everyone else at the time. Most were of a vintage theme with lots of vintage pages and ephemera all through out them.
For the past few weeks I have been creating some junk journal ephemera like tags, pockets and other stuff that can be used in junk journals. However, I’m not making any vintage themed items like before. Somehow I have come up with my own designs and they express who I am as a person. Now it has been hard to find my own style of design because I have been so busy watching what everyone else is doing and I haven’t been able to do anything that was “me”.
Now, the name I use online as you know by now is “Mod Girl”. And that’s because I love all things from the late 60’s to early 70’s. Which has also been referred to as the “Mod Era”. I have always enjoyed doodling and drawing plants, leaves, flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, etc… and I’ve been adding all these things to my ephemera items that I’ve been working on. The result is what I think expresses who I am as an artist. A little whimsy, a little retro, a little modern and “fun”. Lol. Below are a couple of screen shots that I created so you can see what I’ve been up to:
So, when will I be back to creating and sending tag offers in my online group again? Hmmm, that’s hard to say. I am on a creative spree right now and trying to stop hasn’t been an easy thing to do. I have so much mojo right now it’s simply pouring out of me and into my designs. When creating the doodles I first draw them with an ink pen and then color them in with either art crayons, watercolor paint or acrylic art markers. I must confess however that using the watercolors is what looks best to me but it’s much easier using the markers to color them in so that’s what I’m using right now. I guess when the markers run out of “color” I will go back to using the art crayons or watercolors. Lol.
Anyway. That’s what has been keeping me busy lately. And you know, I was sitting here thinking that I have been so scared to try and find my own style because I didn’t know what to do. How I found mine was by accident when I think about it. I was looking at some coloring books at Etsy and I started thinking about how people come up with those designs that you color and I started coloring in my doodle flowers and decided to paste one onto a journal tag I was making and I liked it. I then started making it pretty by adding stuff to it that would make the flower stand out more and that is how I got started and found my style. And I can tell you that it was a work in progress. Which means I removed some things I didn’t like and added things I did until I got it how I wanted it to look. There was a method to the madness as they say, lol. I am happy that I have FINALLY found my own style of design and I hope you like it as well. I think we all have our own type of style where design is concerned. Some people are just fortunate to find out what they like while some are still trying to find there’s.
And if you are one of those who is still trying to find your own style. DON’T give up. Keep trying. Because one day you might just find it. Hey, stranger things have happened, RIGHT? But seriously, keep trying because I can tell you from experience that when you do find it, you will feel like you are on top of the world. And it’s a really nice feeling. Anyway. Thanks for stopping by and hugs,
